WEBQUEST:
Planning a LasVegas Trip and Budget
Teacher/Design Information
Learners:
8th grade mathematics students (Michigan)
Educational Goal:
This WebQuest will accomplish two objectives: 1) academically, how to calculate tipping (percent increase), calculating a discount (percent decrease), and total cost, and 2) real-world experience with tipping and why it is necessary (how people in the service industry make a living). Students will create an itinerary and budget sheet for assessment
Standards:
Number and Operations – Solve Problems
· Understand percent increase and percent decrease in both sum and product form.
· Solve problems involving percent increases and decreases.
Process:
Students will each partner up with another student for a one day and one night stay in a luxury Las Vegas hotel that has everything that they need so that they never have to set foot out of the hotel. Students will choose activities where they are provided a service and have to calculate their tip for each service that they receive during their stay along with applicable sales tax for each expense. Students should research tipping etiquette before their trip in order to have enough money to pay for their hotel room, entertainment, meals in the restaurants, salon and spa services, maid service, room service, valet service, etc. They will each have $1200 to spend on their day trip in Las Vegas, and they will choose their hotel from a provided list, and plan their itinerary and budget before they leave for their trip. They will also be provided with coupons for certain discounts for use during their stay. Their goal is to not exceed their $1200 day vacation budget, but come home with as much money in their pocket as they can (because their parent/guardian said what they do not spend, they can keep!).
