Educational Application of Microsoft Word
Creating a format model of a document that students are expected to create, when accompanied with a grading rubric, are invaluable educational tools that allow students to work independently and provides the teacher with a clear means of assessment. Teachers in core subject areas are not necessarily responsible for teaching keyboarding or computer skills, but any time the teacher can introduce a new skill that will be used within a project or assignment, the goal is to get the students to learn and practice the skill, such as those within Word, while showing mastery of the objectives within the curriculum. Assessment should not be heavily weighed on how well the student manipulated the document and all of the formatting features, therefore, the students should receive clear and detailed directions on how to create a document that is a success visually while addressing the objectives that are being taught.
Providing a detailed model with step-by-step directions and a grading rubric allows students to work independently not only in the computer lab, but at home, as well. Parents will be able to follow the format model and not be left wondering what their child is supposed to accomplish, therefore, should be able to successfully assist the student with a project’s completion. The model, along with rubric, allows students to have a checklist for success, while learning skills that will be helpful to them throughout their school career, and outside of the class where, even in entry level jobs, basic computer skills are desired.
Assessing student work that addresses the step-by-step requirements for the format of the document then becomes an easier task for the teacher. After the teacher does the visual checks of formatting requirements, more attention can then be paid to the details of the curriculum goals
