MIDDLE LEVEL ONLINE MATHEMATICS RESOURCES
By the time students make it to the middle-level grades, the skills that have not been mastered becomes apparent. As any teacher knows, students need to build upon their prior knowledge, and coming from a teacher who has taught both middle-level language arts and math, there is not a core subject where mastering prior skills greatly impacts future success like those necessary for mathematics. While teaching both 8th and 7th grade math, I find myself each year telling the students, “I am not supposed to be teaching you this, you were supposed to come to me in this grade level having mastered this skill.” What are the standards (National Council of Mathematics – Principle & Standards for School Mathematics) that students consistently fall short upon? The skills that are lacking primarily come from the Numbers and Operations (Number Sense) standards, which effects students abilities to master the Algebra standards.
The Michigan State University Educational Technology master’s program has been one of the most useful experiences to help educators learn and identify online resources that are both technologically and educationally beneficial for enhancing students’ learning. Since I teach middle level students, my focus is on these grade levels, primarily Numbers and Operations and Algebra, but my online resource library will include useful applications that address all standards of learning.
Included will be 20 online mathematics resources that are briefly annotated, and 10 of these will include a detailed description of what the educational tool addresses.
- Number & Operations
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Measurement
- Data Analysis & Probability
- Problem Solving
- Reasoning & Proof
