What is Involved?
There is a 3-course Educational Technology Certificate Program at Michigan State University that is required before beginning their Master of Arts in Educational Technology program, and I am currently in the final CEP course (CEP 810, CEP 811, CEP 812), along with having started the Master's program in the summer of 2010. The primary purpose of the certificate program is to improve teaching through the use of instructional technology. More important is the end result, to engage students and enhance learning via the language of their generation: INTERNET TECHNOLOGY.
The first course, CEP 810, focuses on learning to use technology and making a difference for learning using technology. In the CEP 811 course, our assignments are primarily centered around web-based educational resources, multimedia, and Web 2.0 Technologies (i.e. social networks such as Facebook, collaborations such as wikis, accessability tools such as an RSS Reader...then there are blogs, podcasts, YouTube). The emphasis of the CEP 812 course is placed on practical applications of technology that align with state and national technology standards.
As far as I am concerned, those of us who are enrolled in this program are very fortunate. Since we are all involved in education, it is wise to evolve as educators in this technological era, moving from "digital immigrants" to "digital natives," who are today's students. We are being introduced to a large variety of technological teaching resources and the assignments (creating WebQuests, blogs, websites, Stand-Alone Instructional Resource [StAIR]) are extremely worthwhile and will be valuable in the classroom. Not only will we know WHAT to do with technology, we will know HOW to create the educational technology. This will be a rewarding journey.
